The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum opened in 1995 on the waterfront in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. The location was chosen by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation which included members like the publisher of Rolling Stone, Jann Wenner, and founder of Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegun.

The building was designed by famed architect I.M. Pei, who also designed the 1988 Louvre museum extension in Paris. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in June 1993 with Pete Townshend and Chuck Berry in attendance.

One of the permanent displays in the museum is an exciting multi-media presentation showcasing every single inductee into the Hall since 1986. The induction ceremonies are held every year at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.

2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees

(January 10, 2007 Press release)

On January 8, 2007, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation today announces its inductees for 2007. The inductees are:

- Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (Kid Creole, Cowboy, Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel, Mr. Ness, Raheim)

- R.E.M. (Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Michael Stipe)

- The Ronettes (Estelle Bennett, Ronnie Spector, Nedra Talley)

- Patti Smith

- Van Halen (Michael Anthony, Sammy Hagar, Alex Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth)

The five inductees will be honored at a ceremony on March 12, 2007, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. Presenters and performers at the induction will be announced in February, 2007. "We couldn't be more proud to honor this unique, diverse group of rockers, rappers, singers and poets. This is what rock and roll is all about," said Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation President and C.E.O., Joel Peresman.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on March 12, 2007 will also honor Ahmet Ertegun, legendary founder of Atlantic Records. Ertegun, who was a crucial figure in the careers of artists ranging from Ray Charles to Aretha Franklin to the Rolling Stones to Led Zeppelin, was instrumental in founding and was the Chairman of the Foundation. The Rock Hall Museum in Cleveland's main exhibit hall is the Ahmet Ertegun Exhibition Hall.

The 2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M., The Ronettes, Patti Smith and Van Halen were chosen by the 600 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. Artists are eligible for inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after their first recording is released.

In addition to being honored at the ceremony on March 12, 2007, each artist who is inducted is commemorated within the I.M. Pei-designed museum in Cleveland, Ohio. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame displays the signature of each inductee inscribed in glass. In addition, there is an exhibit of artifacts from this year's inductees, and a multi-media film presentation with highlights from each artist's career. The exhibit on this year's inductees will open in March, 2007, and will run for one year.

Sex Pistols Refuse to appear at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2006 Induction Ceremony
(Feb. 24, 2006)

The groundbreaking English punk rock group officially declined the honor -- to be handed out March 13 at a dinner and performance at the Waldorf Astoria in New York -- in a crudely scrawled, mispunctuated handwritten message posted on the band's Web site Friday.

"Next to the SEX PISTOLS rock and roll and that hall of fame is a piss stain," the statement read. "Your museum. Urine in wine. Were (sic) not coming. Were (sic) not your monkey and so what?"

The statement slammed Hall of Fame voters as "music industry people," and excoriated the high price of attending the exclusive event -- $25,000 for a table, "or $15,000 to squeak up in the gallery."

Other 2006 inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame include Black Sabbath, Blondie, Miles Davis, Lynyrd Skynyrd and industry executives Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss.

Susan Evans, executive director of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said of the band's announcement, "They're being the outrageous punksters that they are, and that's rock 'n' roll."

The complete statement is posted at http://www.thefilthandthefury.co.uk.

They broke up after just one album but left a lasting legacy in rock, as Johnny Rotten and the late Sid Vicious shocked the rock establishment with songs like "God Save the Queen" and "Pretty Vacant."

U2 talks to the press after being inducted into the Hall of Fame on March 14, 2005 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.

Bruce Springsteen gave a 15-minute speech to induct U2 into the Hall of Fame. He gave a truly heartfelt yet humorous speech talking specifically about each band member and what they contributed to the band, he talked about their IPOD commercial, he talked about seeing them play back in the early 80s with Pete Townshend, and he talked about their Irish heritage.

Each member of U2 also gave their own speech to accept the award. There were a lot of touching moments as well as humorous ones. Most moving was Bono's tribute to each of his bandmates describing his favorite moments separately with The Edge, Adam, and Larry over the years.

One of the cool things Bono said was how he believes the music industry needs to look at themselves and reevaluate how things are done because he said U2 would never have been given a chance past their second album in today's music climate. They performed four songs: "Until the End of the world", "Pride", "Still Haven't Found what I'm looking for" (with Bruce) and "Vertigo". During the first song, Bono walked out into the audience and grabbed a bottle of champagne off one of the tables and popped the cork while he was singing. Classic Bono!

The show was running really late and they didn't come to the press room until 1 am. When Bono was asked if he would run for president, he said, no, he didn't want to live in a smaller house. Larry said he could've waited 10 years to be inducted in the Hall of Fame, but it was still an honor.

Chrissy Hynde of The Pretenders talks to the press after being inducted into the Hall of Fame on March 14, 2005 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. The only other surviving member of the original Pretenders present at the ceremony was drummer, Martin Chambers.
