Global Concerts Special Report

LIVE EARTH: 7-7-07

The Concerts for a Climate in Crisis

Live Earth is a 24-hour, 7-continent concert series taking place on 7/7/07 that will bring together more than 100 music artists and 2 billion people to trigger a global movement to solve the climate crisis.

Live Earth will reach this worldwide audience through an unprecedented global media architecture covering all media platforms - TV, radio, Internet and wireless channels.

Live Earth marks the beginning of a multi-year campaign led by the Alliance for Climate Protection, The Climate Group and other international organizations to drive individuals, corporations and governments to take action to solve global warming. Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore is the Chair of the Alliance and Partner of Live Earth.

Live Earth was founded by Kevin Wall, the Worldwide Executive Producer of Live 8, an event that brought together one of the largest audiences in history to combat poverty. Wall formed a partnership with Al Gore and the Alliance for Climate Protection to ensure that Live Earth inspires behavioral changes long after 7/7/07.

Live Earth will stage official concerts at :
Giants Stadium in New York;
Wembley Stadium in London;
Aussie Stadium in Sydney;
the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg;
Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro
Makuhari Messe in Tokyo;
the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai;
and HSH Nordbank Arena in Hamburg.

Live Earth concerts will be broadcast to a live worldwide audience by MSN at www.LiveEarth.MSN.com.

With support from the U.S. Green Building Council, creators of the LEED Green Building Rating System, Live Earth will implement new Green Event Guidelines. All Live Earth venues will be designed and constructed by a team of sustainability engineers who will address the environmental and energy management challenges of each concert site, as well as the operations of sponsors, partners and other Live Earth affiliates. Each venue will not only be designed to maintain a minimum environmental impact, but will showcase the latest state-of-the-art energy efficiency, on-site power generation, and sustainable facilities management practices.

Live Earth is a project of the SOS campaign , which is using a powerful multimedia platform - films, television, radio, Internet, books, wireless and others - to move people to combat the climate crisis.

Cameron Diaz, Al Gore and Kevin Wall hold press conference to announce Live Earth SOS Campaign / Live Earth Concert (Los Angeles, CA)

Detailing a historic effort to engage billions of people across the globe, Kevin Wall, Al Gore, Pharrell Williams, Maná, Cameron Diaz, and the MSN Network today launched Save Our Selves (SOS) : The Campaign for a Climate in Crisis. The announcement was made at the California Science Center.

LiveEarthSOS is designed to trigger a global movement to combat our climate crisis. It will reach people in every corner of the planet through television, film, radio, the Internet and Live Earth, a 24-hour concert on 7/7/07 across all 7 continents that will bring together more than 100 of the world's top musical acts. Live Earth alone will engage an audience of more than 2 billion people through concert attendance and broadcasts. MSN has partnered with SOS to use its reach to make the Live Earth concerts available across the globe. The Live Earth audience, and the proceeds from the concerts, will create the foundation for a new, multi-year global effort to combat the climate crisis led by The Alliance for Climate Protection and its Chair, Vice President Al Gore. SOS was founded by Kevin Wall, who won an Emmy as Worldwide Executive Producer of Live 8."Our climate crisis is the paramount challenge facing humanity. SOS is more than a global distress call. SOS will give the world the tools we need to answer that call with meaningful action. The most important part of SOS is how individuals, corporations, and governments respond," Wall said. "Our climate crisis affects everyone, everywhere, and that's who SOS is aimed at. Only a global response can conquer our climate crisis. SOS asks all people to Save Our Selves because only we can."

"In order to solve the Climate Crisis, we have to reach billions of people. We are launching SOS and Live Earth to begin a process of communication that will mobilize people all over the world to take action," Gore said. "The Climate Crisis will only be stopped by an unprecedented and sustained global movement. We hope to jump-start that movement right here, right now, and take it to a new level on July 7, 2007."

Capitol Records Announce The DVD Release Of Live 8 on November 8, 2005

Press Release (September 2005)
On November 8, 2005 the biggest live event DVD project of its kind will be released.  Live 8 brings together performances from the amazing series of concerts which took place around the world on 2 July 2005.

Live 8 &endash; One Day One Concert One World

The 4-disc set contains three discs of live footage taken from the Live 8 shows staged in London and Philadelphia alongside key highlights from the seven other events staged across the world.  Every artist who performed at London's Hyde Park and Philadelphia's Museum Of Art appear on the DVD, many of them with their full sets.

"It was 20 years ago today…"  Live 8 opens with U2 and Paul McCartney's crowd-rousing rendition of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and also features Pink Floyd's historical reunion, Robbie Williams's show-stopping performance and Madonna's breathtakingly energetic set.  Younger artists such as Snow Patrol, The Killers and Joss Stone comfortably intertwine with rock n' roll legends such as The Who and Sting.  One-off duets come from Paul McCartney and George Michael, Stevie Wonder and Adam Levine (Maroon 5), Elton John and Pete Doherty and Coldplay and Richard Ashcroft.  Disc 3 closes as the London concert closed on 2 July with the stars of Live 8 Hyde Park taking to the stage for the stunning 'Hey Jude' finale.

Along the way the Kaiser Chiefs waved the flag for Britain in Philadelphia.   Their vigorous performance is captured alongside American superstars Destiny's Child, Bon Jovi, Black Eyed Peas and soul legend Stevie Wonder.

"I hope this will be the biggest selling DVD of all time.  It deserves to be.  More importantly perhaps, it should be, for it will help us achieve our goal of changing the lives of the extreme poor for the better and making our generation the one that helped end the disgrace of poverty."  Says Live 8 organiser Sir Bob Geldof.

EMI and the Live 8 organisation have agreed that a generous royalty from sales of the Live 8 DVD will go to the Band Aid Trust for the relief of hunger and poverty in Africa.

Live 8 was held on 2 July 2005.  Nine simultaneous, free concerts starring the cream of international rock and pop artists were staged in London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Tokyo, Moscow, Toronto, Johannesburg and Philadelphia.  The concerts acted as a starting point for The Long Walk To Justice in support of the Make Poverty History and Global Call To Action campaigns and was timed to focus attention on the critical decisions made by the G8 summit four days later.

"You're such a lovely audience, we'd like to take you home with us" sang Bono.  Now the two million-strong live audience and 5 billion viewers around the world can take Live 8 home with them…

Bono and Geldof declare victory for Live 8
from http://www.one.org in the US

From the 500,000 letters you sent to President Bush to Live 8 in Philadelphia to the G8 Summit in Gleneagles, you called on eight men to do more to fight global AIDS and extreme poverty, and they heard your call. In Scotland this past Friday, overcoming the shadow of a tragic day in London, President Bush joined G8 leaders in an unprecedented deal to cancel debts and double aid to Africa.

 For African nations fighting poverty and corruption, this means a $25 billion increase in aid and wiping out 100% of their debts. With this funding, Africa can halve deaths from malaria, put millions of children into school, and 10 million people across the world will have access to lifesaving AIDS drugs. Behind each of these numbers is one person, one life that will be changed forever.

The new funds "mean the financing is in place to halve deaths from malaria by 2010," Bono said. He added that 600,000 people "will be alive to remember this G-8 in Gleneagles who would have lost their lives to" malaria.

Geldof, creator of the Live 8 concerts, said: "The summit in Gleneagles is a qualified triumph." Appearing alongside Bono at a news conference held at the close of the summit, he said: "A great justice has been done."

Bono warned G-8 leaders that they will be held to account on their promises.

"If these people let us down ... they will feel it when they go to the ballot," he said.

 Bono said the Live 8 concerts and pro-Africa protest marches near the G-8 summit helped persuade the leaders of the wealthy countries to try to help end poverty in Africa.

"It's not the end; it's the beginning of the end," Bono said. "A mountain has been climbed here only to reveal higher peaks behind it."

 This is a big thank you to all 1.5 million of you who joined together as ONE to do something extraordinary.

4) This concert is not about raising money, but for gaining people's support.
"We're not asking for your money, we're asking for your voice," say the organizers.
The concerts are not fundraisers but rallying points for the largest political constituency ever mobilised to call for justice for Africa and the world's poor. They will focus the whole world's attention on the critical decisions to be made by the G8 four days later.

The historic 1985 Live Aid raised $200 million for Africa, but that is minimal in terms of Africa's debt. Every day, Africa pays $200 million in debts owed to other countries including the "Group of 8" represented at the summit. If Africa is released from their debt by the leaders of the "Group of 8", they can start building for their future and combat the poverty, disease and famine that has taken over the continent.

5) The Live 8 event is being organized by:
Bob Geldof, organizer of the original Live Aid

(all photos © Daytrippin')
shown here at the Live 8 press conference on May 31, 2005 in London;

"These concerts are the starting point for THE LONG WALK TO JUSTICE - we will not tolerate the further pain of the poor while we have the financial and moral means to prevent it." says Geldof. "The boys and girls with guitars will finally get to turn the world on its axis. What we started 20 years ago is coming to a political point in a few weeks. What we do next is seriously, properly, historically and politically important."

and Elton John appeared at the Live 8 press conference in London.

6) LIVE 8 will be broadcast all over the world through TV, satellite, radio and the internet.

The Philadelphia concert will begin around Noon and run for six hours.
The London concert will begin in the afternoon and run for six hours.
All concerts will send a video feed to London.
In total, there will be 10 hours of live event coverage on TV.

The main broadcaster in the UK is the BBC.
In the U.S., an all-day concert will be broadcast on MTV and VH1 from Noon to 8 pm EST.
A primetime show will be broadcast on a network station not yet identified (probably ABC).

Internationally, the MTV, VH1 and Music Factory networks will show hourly bulletins about the show.

XM Satellite Radio Channels 200 and 201 will carry the concerts live beginning at 9 am.

As the exclusive Live 8 online partner, AOL will bring together a worldwide audience for the only complete broadcast of all of the Live 8 concerts for free, live and on demand.
People around the world will be able to learn more about global poverty, connect with a community of fans and make their voices heard at
http://www.aolmusic.com
http://www.aol.co.uk
http://www.aol.de
http://www.aol.fr
AOL Music will keep the concert footage on the internet for SIX WEEKS after the live concerts are broadcast.

7) There is a PLAN on the table
It's called the Commission for Africa and it was put together by Prime Minister Tony Blair, Bob Geldof and leaders from Africa. It calls for 100% debt cancellation for the poorest countries, doubling aid, fair trade and specific measure to fight corruption. If these things are agreed, then Africans will be able to lift themselves out of poverty, with a little help from their friends.

8) Other rallies will be held to support the Live 8 cause
At the Live 8 press conference, it was announced that ONE: The campaign to make poverty history in the U.S. would sponsor a rally in Washington, DC on Friday, July 1 hosted by George Clooney.

ONE has also produced a TV campaign of commercials featuring a multitude of celebrities including Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Tom Hanks, P.Diddy, Jamie Foxx, Bono, Al Pacino, Justin Timberlake and many more.

You can see the videos at
http://www.one.org

9) The Long Walk To Justice will then move to Scotland
Midge Ure, who will announce details of events planned for Edinburgh next week said, "Following the Live 8 concerts on July 2, tens of thousands of people will be travelling to Scotland with a sense of great responsibility as we walk the last mile to justice. By the eve of the G8 summit - Wednesday 6 July in Edinburgh &endash; there will be thousands upon thousands of committed people in Scotland's capital &endash; this will be the world's last opportunity to say to the G8 - 'be bold, be historic, be magnificent. Tomorrow, you can actually take the steps to make poverty history. Are you for or are you against? It's make your mind up time."

10) Live 8: 8 men can save millions of lives
The aim of it all is to make poverty history. "Today, like every other day, 50,000 people will die unnecessarily," says Richard Curtis, the writer and co-founder of Comic Relief, which is part of the Make Poverty History Campaign. "If 50,000 people died in London on Monday, in Rome on Tuesday, Berlin on Wednesday, in New York on Thursday and in Paris on Friday, the G8 leaders in Gleneagles would find the money and the solution to the problem as they walked from the front door to the reception desk."

"Live 8 gives us a way to come together with one voice and make them hear us. At live8live.com you will find the addresses and telephone numbers of these 8 men to write, call, email, send a text, or hold up a sign. We want people to get more involved and join campaigns like ONE.org in the U.S. and Make Poverty History in the UK and get on the move.

If enough people come, watch or tune in to Live 8 and take action, then these 8 men will agree to do the right thing. Live 8 will therefore be the most important concert ever."
